Am 27.Mai 1983 erschien She Works Hard for the Money, die erste Single vom gleichnamigen Donna Summer Album.
Der Song wurde ein weltweiter Erfolg und war einer der Sommer-Hits des Jahres 1983.
Über die Entstehung des Songs sagte Donna: "I was at a Grammys party … and I went to the ladies room and on my way in I saw this little old lady sitting at the end of the bar. And she was asleep. She was the bathroom attendant. And at that same moment, a group of ladies walked into the room and started spraying their hair and doing all these things. And my first thought was 'God, she works hard for her money, that lady.'" "And then I thought, 'man, that's a song. So I went and grabbed my manager and we went back into the bathroom and started writing the song on a piece of toilet paper." Die Toiletten-Frau ist auf der Rückseite des Album Covers zu sehen.Der Song zählt heute zu den grossen Frauen-Hymnen der Pop-Musik und das Video ist nach Billie Jean von Michael Jackson das zweite Video eines afro-amerkanischen Künstlers, das MTV damals zeigte. Damit ist es auch das erste einer schwarzen Sängerin, dass die "color-barrier" überwunden hatte, die es damals noch gab.
Bei den Grammy Awards 1984 sang Donna Summer den Song live als opening act. Bis heute ist dies der Grammy Auftritt mit den meisten Zuschauern.
